Twenty-five years later, the film’s opening scene sees Ghostface return to target a group teenagers that are somehow connected to the original Woodsboro killings. Scream is a parody of legacy sequels and reboots, and combines violence from the slasher genres with elements of black comedy. The film offers commentary on horror fandom culture, especially the division between classic slasher films and “elevated terror”.
After the 2011 release of Scream 4, Craven, Kevin Williamson and Harvey Weinstein discussed the possibility of making fifth and sixth Scream films. However, they were hesitant about releasing more films after the disappointing box office results of the fourth film. Spyglass Media Group, which acquired the rights to Scream in November 2019 after Weinstein was accused of sexual assault and The Weinstein Company’s closure, confirmed that a new film would be made.
Williamson was back as executive producer the following year. He also confirmed that the film wouldn’t be a reboot, and that BetinelliOlpin and Gillett from Radio Silence had been hired to direct it in March 2020. Campbell and Arquette were confirmed later in the month. Cox and the other cast members joined the film throughout the year. Filming was held in North Carolina between September 2020 and November 2020 due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. To avoid plot leaks, multiple screenplays were created and additional scenes were shot.
Paramount Pictures released Scream in the United States theatrically on January 14, 2022. It grossed $140 million globally. Critics praised it for its respect for Craven’s legacy, and providing thoughtful meta-commentary about horror films. Some even called it the best sequel to Scream. A sequel, untitled, was announced in February 2022 with a release date of March 31, 2023.
